If only the games were played on paper

The guys over at Baseball Prospectus rank the Indians as the 10th best team in baseball. This is based on a +35 run differential, the result of a slew of blowout victories (seven by more than 10 runs) against only a couple of blowout defeats. Even though the Indians have a record of 43-54 the BP guys think the Indians’ true winning percentage is closer to .524. Which is encouraging, I guess. More importantly, they also think Shapiro should call up Andy Marte now, much in the same way the Mets treated David Wright when he was their stud 3B prospect. According to today’s Plain Dealer, a number of people in the Indians organization have been closely following Marte over the past week, including Shapiro, who is headed to Buffalo to watch the next three to four games. Marte likely won’t join the Indians until Aaron Boone is traded, which is as it should be according to Sheldon Ocker. The deadline is about a week away, so the Andy Marte Countdown has begun.
