With Charlie Frye now out of the picture there is a strong possibility that Brady Quinn will start Sunday against the Bengals. Is there any reason to expect that starting Brady Quinn with help?
I’m not yet sure.
But while I work on an answer for that I’d like to direct your attention to something I forgot to post a few weeks ago in my post about NFL experts’ choices for how many games the Browns will win the season, which I didn’t, in fact, post. I forgot.
Football Outsiders — the Baseball Prospectus of football, made somewhat famous recently when Aaron Schatz was featured on Bill Simmons’s podcast — posted its expected win totals for all 32 teams. Here is their prediction for the Browns (note that this was in a story about over/under win totals): Read the rest of this entry »

* The University of Michigan is 0-4 since Bo Schembechler kicked the can. Is it too early to suggest that there is some sort of Schembechler hex affecting Michigan?
* Ohio State moved up in the rankings this week, from 12 to 10. Other than Michigan beginning the season ranked #5 this has to be the most bloated ranking this season. Of course Michigan dropped from the rankings after the first week of the season. Ohio State has managed to move up despite two less than stellar performances against teams that had no right being on the field with the Buckeyes.
* Put it this way: Ohio State would have lost last weekend had they played Oregon.
* There is a black hole at quarterback for the Buckeyes. It’s not quite as bad as what we are seeing with the Browns, but there is definitely consistency among football teams in Ohio.
* Wisconsin is eminently beatable this year, which is usually not what you find yourself saying of the team with the nation’s longest winning streak. But after watching their uninspiring game against UNLV the smart money is on the streak ending before bowl season. Read the rest of this entry »

As a number of media outlets have reported, Ken Dorsey was spotted in Berea yesterday afternoon at Browns headquarters. This is the same Ken Dorsey who’s played mentor to Brady Quinn and who played for offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski at Miami. It’s the same Ken Dorsey who was cut last week, seemingly in favor of Derek Anderson, but at this point one has to speculate that the person whose job is in jeopardy is Charlie Frye.
The Plain Dealer suggests the Dorsey might be a stopgap until Brady Quinn is ready to start. Should this prove true — should Dorsey start this weekend against Cincinnati — then what we’ll be witnessing is the ultimate bungling of a roster. What happened against Pittsburgh that didn’t happen in the countless hours of practicing that made it obvious that Dorsey and not one of the other three quarterbacks is the guy who should be starting for the Browns? I know Frye and Anderson stunk up the joint, but it’s not as though Dorsey did anything on his end to improve his stock. Apparently at this point in the Browns season “not sucking” is worth a starting job by virtue of a lack of “decent” or “pretty good” or “solid” or “worthwhile” quarterbacks on roster.
